The 2019 Engineering Design Video Contest sponsored by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada(NSERC) Chair in Design Engineering for Innovation is now open and we are looking forward to this years entries!
This year, we are excited to see your 30-second video that address, discuss or give example(s) of The Impact and/or Effect of Design Engineering on Social Issues. Contest rules and submissions details:
How to Enter:
  • Include a paragraph explaining the concept of your video
  • Upload your video entry to YouTube
  • Email the link to your YouTube video entry to yorkdesigneng@gmail.com
  • Include the subject line: ‘2019 Video Contest’ to confirm submission
  • Include your name, YorkU student ID, major and year of study
Note: The video will become a “favourite” on the YorkDesignEng YouTube Channel upon being reviewed. Wait to hear if you were one of the selected finalists! The top videos will be exhibited, and the winner will be announced.
Rules and Regulations
  • Participants: Must be currently enrolled in the undergraduate engineering program at Lassonde School of Engineering at York University
  • Number of Submissions: Videos may be submitted as an individual or as a team; two entries per person or team allowed
  • Video Style: Videos must contain appropriate language (no profanities) or they will be disqualified. Creativity is encouraged, and we welcome all styles of video for example: animation, documentary, slideshow voiceover, interview, one-man show, sock-puppets, flip-book or whatever else you can imagine.
  • Criteria: Length 30 seconds maximum. Content must address the topic/theme and relate to Design Engineering
  • Prize: The contest winner/winning team will win a prize of $500 and their video will be recognized by the school and featured on the Design website and YouTube page.
Contest Overview
The purpose of the contest is to get engineering students to submit a video about design engineering. By submitting a video on the YouTube Contest Page, you are agreeing to place your video online for public viewing. All entries will be screened for appropriateness and those deemed ineligible will be removed immediately. Each submission must be related to design engineering. Creativity and presentation skills will be taken into consideration.
Participants are encouraged to do their own research and put together a convincing case. The contest’s objective is to foster a greater understanding of the place of engineering design in the world, so that students become aware of what design engineering offers them in their studies and in the real world.

2018 Lassonde Design Day Expo (Capstone)

Check out the video slideshow of the 2018 Lassonde Design Day Expo – featuring the Capstone Course Projects of 4th year student groups from the Lassonde School of Engineering.

Projects also include those of the first graduating cohort of the Mechanical Engineering Department and awards for best projects were financed by Industry partners and Lassonde School supporters.

Course Description:

The course consists of pre-travel workshops, interactive lessons and workshops on location (Both on the campus of academic partners and through site visits to companies, incubators and investors). In addition, students will be required to work extensively in groups on developing a technology solution to an important problem, and make final presentation to local investors and entrepreneurship support organizations. Following the international trip, students must participate in workshops and presentations at Lassonde, to share the lessons learned both with professors and each other.

Profile of professor Alex Czekanski

The mechanical engineering dept’s own Professor Alex Czekanski was recently featured in yfile with cameos from some of the undergraduate and graduate students he supervises! Read on below about how professor Czekanski is using his role as the NSERC/Quanser Chair in Design in Engineering for Innovation to support unique opportunities and studies for the students at Lassonde and how his students have been impacted by his advocacy.

 

Engineering professor brings energy and heart to program

 

No one who knows Alex Czekanski, the NSERC/Quanser Chair in Design Engineering for Innovation at York University, would be surprised to learn that he was awarded the President’s University-Wide Teaching Award for his work in experiential education.

Czekanski, an associate professor, helped create York University’s fledgling mechanical engineering program from the ground up and he works hard to ensure that classes meet the required learning outcomes, as well as the career needs of his students. He has also introduced design engineering to the curriculum, backed by government and industry sponsorship.

“It is an opportunity to build a program, to provide ideas and implement them,” Czekanski said. “We had to deliver.”

And deliver he does. He believes in providing his students with an understanding of how their classes relate to the working world. He also offers them opportunities to try their hand at real engineering tasks, whether in the classroom, the lab or extra-curricular clubs. Czekanski has established a design club, a motorsport club and a mechanical engineering club for the students. He also oversaw the outfitting of the school’s machine shop and materials lab.

“I am preparing students for careers, not jobs, and experiential learning is key,” Czekanski said.

He has had a big impact on the Lassonde School of Engineering since he arrived in 2014 after spending nine years working in industry. In Czekanski’s eyes, industry experience adds another layer to his teaching, because he can provide his students with real-world examples to illustrate engineering concepts.

“He loves to relate things back to industrial applications and make those connections,” said Farouk Wahsh, a fourth-year mechanical engineering student.

Czekanski also ensures that his students have firsthand exposure to the perspectives of working engineers. He brings practising engineers to all of his classes as guest speakers, and each semester, he arranges a visit to industry, complete with a tour and face-to-face interactions with engineers. However, the students don’t go to these visits without preparation.

“We work with the Career Centre and the Student Centre so they learn to write resumes and learn about professional ethics and conduct,” Czekanski said. “These trips allow the students to get an idea of where they might like to work after graduation: in research and development, quality control or legal issues, for example. They begin to see subspecialties.”

In addition to overseeing curriculum development, teaching classes, organizing extracurricular clubs and equipping labs, this man-in-motion supervises graduate students and employs undergraduate students in his labs.

Minha Ha, one of the first two female PhD students in mechanical engineering, is one of his graduate students.

“Alex is resourceful and supportive,” she said. “He’s always creating opportunities to connect with people; he’s a good example of a mentor.

“We butt heads, but he’s right there with me. He knows the importance of presence, but he doesn’t micromanage. He makes a long-term investment in his students: He teaches them initiative and they eventually start contributing ideas.”

Diego Moraes, a master’s degree student in mechanical engineering is pleased with the freedom he has to conduct his research as he sees fit.

“Alex lets you take control of your research, but he’s there when you need help, either referring you to specialists or himself,” Moraes said. “He lets us guide our own path, but makes suggestions.”

Wahsh is enthusiastic about Czekanski’s support. “He’s one of the few professors who goes out of his way, especially with undergraduates.”

Given his passion for both his students and his chosen field, Czekanski will undoubtedly continue to surprise and delight classes with his out-of-the-box thinking.

Lassonde Summer Undergraduate Research Conference

August 15, 2017, Lassonde held its annual Summer Research Conference featuring the work of 56 students from various departments, showcasing the multi-faceted talents of York students in engineering and science technology. If you would like to read more about each participants work,  click here.

The IDEA-Lab undergraduate team was in full attendance with the support of the rest in terms of preparation and attendance. There were notable mentions made by the judging committee for IDEA-Lab members Chukubuwekim (Johnson) Omeziri and Farouk Wahsh. The entire team celebrated all the hard work of the graduates and staff who supported their research and posters. Until next summer!

Spring Powered Concept Vehicles on Display during Lassonde Expo 2016

On Friday April 1 2016 – As part of the Lassonde Expo Day showcase of Design Engineering projects, students from the Mini Design Project  Course got to put their design skills to the test.

Their course assignment/objective was to build a functional Spring Powered Concept Vehicle. They tested their prototypes during the Expos in a race of speed and distance. Check the video below for the winning design.
