Lassonde student, Linar Ismagilov, selected for the Next 36

Lassondian Linar Ismagilov has been selected as part of 2016 cohort of the Next 36.

A second year student in Mechanical Engineering, Ismagilov (pictured with the School’s founding donor Pierre Lassonde) will be participating in the 8-month intensive entrepreneurial training program next year.

“Entrepreneurship requires the mastery of multiple skills. Not only does an entrepreneur have to be technically skilled, but he has to also have the vision and business goals to succeed. It’s this combination that I am excited to learn though the Next 36 program,” said Ismagilov.

The Next 36 is a program that accelerates the growth of Canada’s most talented young entrepreneurs by providing mentorship, capital and unparalleled founder development.

Each year, 36 young Canadian innovators are selected in a North America-wide competition. The students are challenged to build a new business venture or iterate and scale an existing idea with enormous potential.

For eight months, these young entrepreneurs are mentored by successful Canadian entrepreneurs and business leaders, taught by some of the world’s top faculty, and seek funding from top investors to build their venture.

As an Next 36 entrepreneur, Ismagilov will get hands-on startup experience by building his venture, learn critical business skills and startup strategy, be inspired by top Canadian entrepreneurs as they share stories of their successes (and failures) and collaborate with impressive peers from across the country to become part of an alumni network of Canada’s young changemakers.

Engineering design is everywhere. Design is an intersection of ideas, principles, and skills that makes great engineering possible. From mechanical engineering to fine art. From how things to work to how things look. Design governs how we perceive, how we work and how we build. It’s not just about looks. It’s about collaboration, integration, passion, and partnership.

The NSERC/Quanser Chair in Design Engineering for Innovation is transforming engineering education at York University by bringing real world, hands-on design problems into the classroom and giving students a deeper understanding of the issues that drive engineering design and innovation.

At the core of Lassonde’s Renaissance Engineering curriculum is a focus on thinking broadly, building with passion and learning from hands-on experience. The Chair in Design Engineering’s goal is to equip all Lassonde students with knowledge of sound design principles, hands on experience and a breadth of design implications including law, business and art. Every Lassonde student is required to take Renaissance Engineering I and II. Renaissance II is designed by the Chair to inspire their engineering passion and give them a broad perspective.

With the support of Quanser, the Chair in Design Engineering has been created to build and promote a unique and interdisciplinary program that advances the knowledge of design principles and establishes a strong design base at Lassonde and the greater York University community. Promoting and encouraging design thinking in engineering is NSERC Design Chair Alex Czekanski’s mission at Lassonde and York University.

About Alex Czekanski: Professor Czekanski is the NSERC/Quanser Chair in Design Engineering for Innovation at Lassonde. As the Chair of the program Prof. Czekanski oversees all design engineering initiatives including the promotion of design engineering at York and Lassonde, development of courses and collaboration with industry and experts. He comes to Lassonde from a senior position at Magna International Inc. Prof. Czekanski holds an MBA in Management Science and Strategic Management from York’s Schulich School of Business and a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto.

Engineering Curriculum: Professor Czekanski has developed an introductory course around design engineering, Renaissance Engineering II and is working on additional courses for engineering students at Lassonde. Courses developed for second-year students will include self-directed design projects, workshops and greater research autonomy. Professor Czekanski’s education initiatives include hands-on learning through workshops, competitions and other flipped classroom activities. In collaboration with Quanser, Professor Czekanski is building a design studio and a learning experience that will teach design as principles and practice.

Industry Collaboration: Industry collaboration and co-operation is central to the Chair’s goals of bringing real-world design to engineering education. A cross-disciplinary and hands-on approach will ensure that Lassonde students receive an education in design engineering that includes experience in the industry through internships, consultation and workshops. The chair will work with industry leaders including Quanser to develop specialized projects that involve work by Lassonde students.

Engineering Education Research: Promoting design thinking and design engineering in the greater engineering curriculum means finding better ways to engage faculty and instruct student. The Chair is conducting research into how engineering education can improve, and what techniques and practices are of greater benefit to students.

Next Four Years: In the next four years, the Chair in Design Engineering will continue working to promote the importance of design for all engineering students and in the university at large. The Chair’s mission will be to develop and implement engaging, hands-on courses that demonstrate design skills and principles to students of all levels within the university.

CSME National Design Competition (CSME NDC) 2016: It’s Around the Corner

The 2016 CSME (Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering) National Design Competition challenges students from universities and technical colleges from across Canada to design and build a 3D printer. This competition is intended to provide mechanical and multi-disciplinary engineering undergraduate university and technical college students in Canada an opportunity to engineer, build and assemble their designs from basic components readily available in the market with a fixed budget.

Eight semi-final design projects will be selected and invited to 2016 Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineering International Congress to present their designs and have a chance to win one of the grand prizes.

The second edition of the CSME National Design Competition is open to all engineering undergraduate or technical college students in Canada. All students must be enrolled as undergraduate engineering degree or diploma programs in Canada at any time during the present academic year. All competitors agree to abide by the Engineering Code of Ethics.

Teams will submit a package consisting of: a technical report that highlights the technical and engineering aspects, a business report that highlights the financial and marketing aspects, a 3D printed prototype part and a promotional video clip.

What’s going on in Lassonde Design Club

Who are we?

Engineering design is the intersection of science, art, politics and production.  The Lassonde Design Club promotes the engineering design process and teaches you how to apply your skills to solve the practical problems of today. This club is open to all interested students from any faculty at York!

If you’re interested in Design Engineering, any Design competitions (CSME, Formula SAE, Hyperloop etc), or looking to find out how to turn your ideas into reality then you should join us.  LDC is a great place to come meet other like minded students, learn new concepts, share ideas and create.

Functions and Functional Structures: In this week’s meeting we looked at functional structures; how to break down your design into its’ basic functions and inputs and outputs. Students learned how to break down a product into its elementary functions, and how to map out the connections between these functions inputs and outputs. Students then applied their knowledge to map the functions some household appliances.

– What does your design need to DO?  We’ll be looking at how to figure out what your design needs to do, and how to build functional structures that can help you better organize and frame your design.

Lassonde School announces partnership with Markham-based Quanser

The world needs a new kind of engineer to solve our greatest challenges, said Lassonde School of Engineering Founding Dean Janusz Kozinski during a special event on Sept. 23 to launch a new partnership between the Lassonde School and Quanser, a design and manufacturing firm based in Markham, Ont.

“Our country needs engineers with passion and perspective, or as we call them ‘Renaissance Engineers’. This bold collaboration with Quanser will give our students and researchers the opportunity to develop design-focused solutions to the emerging global challenges we all face,” said Kozinski.

Quanser specializes in the design and manufacture of advanced systems for real-time control design and implementation used in education, research and industry.

Quanser Chief Executive Officer Paul Gilbert said, “Quanser is thrilled to be the lead partner for this amazing adventure. We see in the Lassonde School of Engineering an institution of vision and creativity, and we look forward to world leading collaborations that will change the way we prepare the leaders of tomorrow.”

Kozinski and Gilbert were joined at the launch of the new partnership by NSERC Chief Operating Officer Janet Walden, Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, and York University’s Vice-President, Research & Innovation Robert Haché.

“This partnership is not about research in ivory towers or developing IP. This is all about giving everyone at the Lassonde School of Engineering the opportunity to apply the principles of design to solve real world problems: whether they are a first year undergraduate or an advanced researcher with Quanser’s exceptional team,” added Kozinski. “Innovation happens when talented people collaborate with unpredictable outcomes. That’s what we believe at Lassonde and our partners at Quanser believe the same thing. We can’t wait to see sparks of creativity fly as we work closely together.”

As part of the event, the holder of a new Chair in Design Engineering for Innovation, which has been created by the Lassonde School of Engineering and Quanser with the support of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), was announced. The inaugural holder of the Chair in Design Engineering for Innovation is Professor Alex Czekanski.

The Lassonde School of Engineering will play host to a full-day conference next month exploring the topic “Getting a Seat and Having a Voice: The Importance of Women Engineers at the Boardroom Table” organized by the Women in Engineering Advisory Committee (WEAC) of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE).

The purpose of this event is to provide those interested in joining a board with the information and tools they need to get started; to discuss the reasons why women are underrepresented on boards; to discuss strategies to encourage more women to reach these leadership positions; and provide OSPE members and guests with an opportunity to network with others in the engineering community.

Opening remarks will be delivered by Pierre Lassonde, Founding Donor of the Lassonde School of Engineering, and Dr. Janusz Kozinski, Founding Dean of the Lassonde School of Engineering.

Speakers will share their career paths, discuss what is involved in a board position, talk about ways to get on a board, etc. including:

Fall Campus Day – Future Lions test drive the Clubs of Lassonde

Eager and curious faces of future Lions filled the campus and the Bergeron Centre, this past Saturday November 7th, as York’s Keele campus held its annual Fall Campus Day. It is an open house of the university for tours, as well as a chance for all faculties, departments, clubs, staff and students to demonstrate the breadth and opportunity at Keele campus that make our school so enticing. On the other side of the grass, are our prospective students and their support systems who came to see, do and ask questions for themselves about topics a website alone cannot answer. Future Lions were met with inviting smiles waiting to show them the unexpected great things about the campus and its offerings.

The Engineering Department, present and ready to toot its horn as it was able to show off the new and beautifully designed Bergeron Centre. On the second floor of the Design Commons, in our wing we featured clubs:

Engineering Design/CSME (Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering) Club

Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers Club),

LDC (Lassonde Design Club),

 

On hand Saturday were Salman Chaudhry representing the Engineering Design/CSME club with a team designed display apparatus demonstrating balancing techniques; Ken Faria representing the Formula SAE club with slides and computer demonstrations of the work they do and Roger Carrick representing the Lassonde Design Club showcasing a 3-D printer constructed in club.  Students were able to not only see these projects but many got to discussing and swapping ideas. Saturday was a telling sign that these Future Lions will be great additions to Lassonde its clubs and continue to learn, create, and produce excellent feats of engineering.

The Machine Shop – ‘Hands On’ Student Learning in The Bergeron Centre

Second year students enrolled in Renaissance Engineer 3 – Mechanical Workshops (LE/MECH 2501) course got their first taste of their new work space the week of October 8th through October 14th, 2015. The ‘Machine Shop’ as the space is aptly named, is located on the basement level of The Bergeron Centre. This brand-new and state-of-the-art facility is $1 million sponsorship of impressive machines, apparatus and tools by Quanser. This engineering utopia will help students develop better practical skills through experiential learning in lieu of lecture structured teaching. Their assignment for this semester, manufacturing a hammer, from handle to head, from scratch.

The course, developed by Associate Professor Alex Czekanski and Mechanical Engineering Technician David Marcinkiewicz is one they hope will truly bring understanding for students in how to imagine future endeavors in practical approach and more importantly, be able to create them physically. The students themselves were more than satisfied with their new work space and had plenty positive remarks about it and their excitement for the rest of the semester.
A few words from the students themselves:

“I’m looking forward to getting more practical skills. Having more practical skills and experience which will greatly assist us in our theoretical knowledge and ability visualising the problems given to us and how best to deal with them. I’m looking forward to using all the new machines, the blades, mills and drill presses. They are going to help us a lot in understanding more complicated and complex topics in our courses. It’s especially in doing them by hand, that allows us to visualize things and more complicated ideas that you would have difficulty comprehending in a 2D fashion.” –Jordan Lovas

“Before hand, I thought this was going to be a slow process. But, the fact that we got to do hands on stuff right away on the first day was pretty cool. I’m looking forward to creating a hammer, from the handle to the head which should start soon. Learning the machines in class we can’t really visualise a lot and really know ‘Oh, I’m going to do this’. Coming here to the machine shop, even though it was introductory, still within ten minutes we were like Ok, this is what we’re supposed to do and how it is possible’”. – Harshil Patel

“Right now the class is fun. It is pretty good hands on work using the machines. You get to know what the final product is going to look like. You can feel the machine and we get a lot of practice also. So far this is all a fun activity, but I’m waiting because I know the hard stuff will come, and then the final evaluation to see how well we performed” –Swapnil Naik

“I thought this first class was pretty fun. There was a lot more info taken in than during the lectures. I learned more here in ten minutes than I did through the hundreds of slides in the lectures. The topic we are studying is quite hands on so this machine workshop is great.
We are assigned to make hammers but I would like see us making something more creative. Like if someone were to try and make their own individual project, they would have to figure out completely how they would carry out that task from conception to physical product and be able to plan ahead. If there was a next level course where this class was the prerequisite, I’d take it!
