Congratulations to Salman Chaudhry! Recipient of the 2017 Governor’s Gold Medal!

At the first convocation of the first full Lassonde School of Engineering Graduate Studies cohort, Mr. Muhammad Salman Chaudhry was given special honor as he was awarded the Governor’s Gold Medal Award.

 

 

 

Salman Chaudhry, earth and space science, On the Characterization of Engineered Elastomers At High Strain Rates

Chaudhry’s work explores finite element modelling and material characterization of elastomers. His research is notable as it provides a useful deign for testing, for which standards currently lack in the development of elastomer components for applications.

During his master’s, he served as co-author on seven international conference publications and presentations, as well as three journal papers. The examining committee noted that his intellectual proficiency and output was at the level one might expect of a doctoral student.

Chaudhry thanked his supervisor Alex Czekanski for his support and expertise during his degree.

 

 

 

 

Mechanical Engineering Grad Seminar

All graduate students in the Mechanical Engineering Department took part in the Grad Seminar hosted at Black Creek Pioneer Village on Friday April 28th. This was a day-long event where each student presented their research to the audiences and defended their presentations during the following Q&A sessions. The grad seminar serves as a great opportunity to share progress and findings with fellow researchers to gain better understanding of the types of work being done throughout the department; whereas normally students tend to share work within their own research teams.

The weeks of hard work and preparation paid off as every student presented excellently. Throughout the day, Professor Pouya Rezai, Professor Alex Czekanski and Professor Paul O’Brien critiqued the research and presented awards to for best presentation, best research and best overall in the masters and PhD levels:

Thursday March 23rd, 2017, Lassonde’s Mechanical Engineering Club (MEC) hosted a Reverse Engineering Workshop event in Bergeron Orientation room.

With curiosity and screwdrivers at the ready, the group of attendees enjoyed an evening of experimentation in reverse engineering and learning via destruction led by Roger Carrick, Designer-in-Residence in the Mechanical Engineering Department.

The event was well timed as for many of the students, their pre-exam stress was alleviated as they broke into the core of VCRs, printers, coffee makers, popcorn makers and other appliances. While having fun disassembling the ‘ancient tech‘ of VCR’s and more, participants got to look at design aspects, component functionality all for better understanding of electronic and appliance mechanisms.

Congratulations to Professor Alex Czekanski for his announcement as recipient of York University, President’s University Wide Teaching Award 2017!

 

For his achievements and contributions to student learning, mentorship as well as the development of program, teaching and curriculum, Professor Czekanski is one among only four university faculty awarded by the Senate Committee on Awards this year. The recipients will be recognized at convocation ceremonies and have their named etched into the historical permanency of the Vari Hall, University-Wide Teaching Award plaques for their contributions.

 

The President’s University-Wide Teaching Awards honour those who, through innovation and commitment, have significantly enhanced the quality of learning by York students.

 

The purpose of these awards is to provide significant recognition for excellence in teaching, to encourage its pursuit, to publicize such excellence when achieved across the university and in the wider community, and to promote informed discussion of teaching and its improvement.

Lassonde! It’s true, we are approaching the time once again for exams, the end of the semester and the year. It’s been a long one so we’re going to have one more event that will be fun AND use some of the things we’ve learned in class!

Join us after your classes on Thurs March 21st as we do experimentation in reverse engineering!!  It’s a free event, you get to play work with cool, old-school devices (disposable cameras, VCRS and other great finds) from our friendly local Value Village and break them apart – strategically of course.    Throughout, we’ll look at design aspects, functionality and importance of components. Come disassemble, tinker and see how things work!

 

MEC Club will provide all necessary equipment and  to keep up the energy!

 

Open to all York students – so come alone, come with your friends or bring your whole class!

CSA Group – National Academic Challenge 2017 – deadline to submit intention 31st March!

Do you have ideas about how to create a better, safer and more sustainable world? Want to be creative and challenge the status quo? Then Canadian Standards Association wants to hear from you.

The CSA Group is dedicated to safety, social good and sustainability through standards’ development, training and advisory solutions and certification services.

Challenge finalists will be selected to attend the CSA Group Annual Conference. Projects will be presented to CSA members and senior management who will vote on the winning presentation.

Industry Tour Series visits: CSA Group, Corporate Head Office

CSA Group – Tour

Taking advantage of the week long break from classes that is Reading Week, the Chair in Design Engineering planned the 3rd installment of the Engineering Industry Tour Series. Bright and early, Thursday February 23rd, 2017, the group went off to the CSA GroupToronto Head Office.

The group got arrived with excitement to greeting and welcome by Karyn Ferguson. From there, the spent the day meeting and talking with various engineers of the facilities, touring the site and seeing of the products tested and experiments being run by the company.

Another success in what will hopefully be a continual project – the Engineering Industry Tour Series of by the Chair in Design Engineering!

CAR@YorkU’s first seminar…a success! Dr. Chandra Veer Singh on “Multiscale Modeling of Materials for Transportation and Energy Applications”

Congratulations to Dr. Alex Czekanski, Associate Professor, Chair in Design Engineering for Innovation AND Founder/Director of CAR@YorkU on the successful completion of it the new centre’s first event.

CAR@YorkU – Centre for Automotive Research at York University, is York University’s Centre for Automotive Research at the Lassonde School of Engineering.

For the first event of the newly founded centre, Dr. Czekanski invited a guest lecturer to give a casual seminar open to all to both Faculty and students. Professor Chandra Veer Singh, from University of Toronto arrived on a bright sunny Friday morning to the Bergeron Centre and gave a rather interesting and energetic talk about what it is his research covers, what he and research group are working on through “Multi-scale Modeling of Materials for Transportation and Energy Applications”

Again, congratulations to the CAR@YorkU on it’s first event, to Professor Chandra for sharing his work and giving well-thought out inspiring responses to the graduate and PhD students’ questions and comments.
