Presenting……. The 2017 Engineering Design Video Contest!!

For a $500 prize, this year we challenge Lassondians to address or discuss or give an example of:  樂

“The Impact of Design Engineering on the Environment and Society of Ontario” by making a 60 second video

That’s it! Pretty easy.  DEADLINE – Monday April 3rd !

You can refer to all of Ontario,  or a region (like the GTA), or just a specific town or example. Scroll down for some video inspiration.



Email the YouTube link of your video entry to yorkdesigneng@gmail.com, subject: “2017 Video Contest” to confirm submission

Include your name, YorkU student ID, major and year of study.

How to Enter:

1)  Upload your video entry to YouTube.

  1. a)  Email the link to your YouTube video entry to yorkdesigneng@gmail.comwith subject line: ‘2017 Video Contest’ to confirm submission – Include your name, YorkU student ID, major and year of study
  1. b) The video will become a “favourite” on the YorkDesignEng YouTube Channel upon being reviewed.
  2.   Wait to hear if you were one of the selected finalists!
  3.   The top 3 videos will be exhibited and the winner will be announced.

*Participants must be currently enrolled in the undergraduate engineering program at Lassonde School of Engineering at York University.

*Number of Submissions. Videos may be submitted as an individual and as a team; two entries per person or team allowed

* Video Style: Videos must contain appropriate language (no profanities) or they will be disqualified. Creativity is encouraged and we welcome all styles of video (animation, documentary, slideshow voiceover, interview, one-man show, sock-puppets or whatever else you can imagine.)

*Criteria: Length -> no longer than 60 seconds ; Content -> must address the topic/theme and relate to Design Engineering ; Ability to -> answer contest question clearly and make a convincing case ; Creativity/Presentation -> Creativity to package and present a video response considering all the above

*Prize: The contest winner/winning team will win a cash prize of $500, their video will be recognized by the school and featured on the Design website and YouTube page

*Contest Overview: The purpose of the contest is to get engineering students to submit a video about design engineering. By submitting a video on the YouTube Contest Page, you are agreeing to place your video online for public viewing. All entries will be screened for appropriateness and those deemed ineligible will be removed immediately. Each submission must be related to design engineering. Creativity and presentation skills will be taken into consideration. Participants are encouraged to do their own research and put together a convincing case. The contest’s objective is to foster a greater understanding of the place of engineering design in the world, so that students may be aware of what design engineering has to off them in their studies and in the real world.

Winning video will be featured on the YorkDesignEng YouTube channel and the DesignEngineering website.



Sign-Up: Industry Tour Series visits the CSA Group

Adding some excitement to your upcoming reading week –> the next stop in the Engineering Industry Tour Series.

On Thursday February 23rd, 2017 the group will visit the Toronto Headquarters of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA Group).

The tour will include visiting the CSA Group facilities and laboratories, interact with practicing professionals, submit your resumes and discuss potentials careers with the CSA Group!

Industry Tour Series visits: Magna Closures, International

Following the first tour of the Engineering Industry Tour Series, iniatited by Associate Professor and Chair in Design Engineering for Innovation Alex Czekanski, on Friday October 28, a group of twenty went for a full day visit to Magna Closures, International in Newmarket, Ontario.

On the bus, just moments after departing from York’s Keele campus, our group of twenty, including 15 mechanical engineering undergraduate students and 5 graduates students were greeted at Magna Closures by some early snow and HR Supervisor Nancy Stafford. The day begin assuredly with an overview of the company, what they specialize in, their global reach and what it is done at their Newmarket branch. Our group was split into to smaller groups each assigned a current co-op participant as personal guide. This was a great opportunity as students in each of their tour groups were able to talk with and ask questions about Magna Closures and Magna’s co-op program from currently working co-op students. This gave many great insight as to what to expect from Magna as a co-op employer should they apply and be accepted to work there.

Magna facilities are massive and it was a welcome treat after walking their premises to be treated to lunch with the added bonus of our lunch groups being paired with engineers, presently working at the facility. Getting to speak with engineers in small groups gave attendees an alternate perspective, of Magna as a job, career and long-term place of employment. Learning about the paper requirements as well as abstract requirements to be a successfully employed at Magna and in the industry.

We would like to thank Magna Closures International and every single person who participated in making our visit to Newmarket branch memorable and enjoyable. We look forward to continuing this program in Spring 2017 keeping students connected to the fluctuations in the field and the field aware of the increasingly advanced graduates.

Industry Tour Series visits: Salga Associates

During the Fall 2016 Co-curricular days, a small group of undergraduate mechanical engineering students had a opportunity to visit a local manufacturing plant, Salga Associates, the North York branch of ABC Group, Inc in North York only a stones throw from Keele Campus.

A new initiative by Chair in Design Engineering for Innovation, Associate Professor Alex Czekanski, the Engineering Industry Tour Series is prompted to be a series of guided visits to plants and facilities specializing in all fields of engineering around the GTA for undergraduate and graduate students. Professor Czekanski previous experience/career in the industry gave him the idea for the benefit and need for such a program connecting students with practicing professionals and the current industry ”

Accompanied by Liz Cook, of the Lassonde Co-op Program, Roger Carrick, Designer-in-Residence and Minha Ha, Education Researcher turned Engineering Education PhD student, a group of 14 undergraduate mechanical engineering students ventured early on a rainy Thursday morning to ABC Group.  The group met first all together with the company president and a few of his executives. After a nice introduction to each of the execs and our students, the group was broken up to tour the plant and facilities in action.

At the end, the group returned for a nice closing and reflection upon the tour with some more execs and sepcialist, some Q&A, some ABC Group swag and a bucket full of chocolate and candy.

 

All in all, a very successful day and first iteration of the Chair in Design Engineering’s Industry Tour Series. On to the next one!

 

Salga Associates visit Oct 27 2016

Spring Powered Concept Vehicles on Display during Lassonde Expo 2016

On Friday April 1 2016 – As part of the Lassonde Expo Day showcase of Design Engineering projects, students from the Mini Design Project  Course got to put their design skills to the test.

Their course assignment/objective was to build a functional Spring Powered Concept Vehicle. They tested their prototypes during the Expos in a race of speed and distance. Check the video below for the winning design.

 

 

 

Winner of 2016 Design Engineering Video Contest!!

Congratulations are in order to this years winner of the 2016 Design Engineering Video Contest – Theresa Nguyen.

Taking our prompt “What does Design Engineering mean to you?”, Theresa Nguyen, a 1st year Mechanical Engineering with Dual Specialist in International Development student, exhausted her 30 second time limit to create a video expressing her interpretation through motion, words and pictures.

What a great way to close out your first year as a Lassondian! We look forward to seeing what other great things you produce over the next few years, as well as how your impression of Design Engineering evolves as you continue through engineering.

Her words to accompany her video: “The essence of the video is to see how even in engineering, the concept of design is everywhere. We take into account the natural structure of the world around us and use its benefits to our advantage in the engineering industry. For example, the natural structure of a triangle is sturdier than a square, so that benefit is taken into account when engineers build bridges.”

The Design Engineering team would like to thank all of the students who participated in this years contest. For those who you didn’t get the chance to enter, don’t fret as there will be another video contest with a similar prompt theme next year.
